In my work as a holistic practitioner, I frequently encounter individuals who seek help only after experiencing symptoms such as high blood pressure, diabetes, some other devastating disease, or mobility issues. Sadly, it often takes a major health scare for people to start paying attention. And when we have limitations, it prevents us from experiencing the things we love to do.

But what if we tuned in to our bodies more often? Our bodies send us gentle signals when something is amiss. But we tend to ignore them, don’t recognize them, or dismiss them completely until they escalate into serious conditions and then resort to surgery or medicine for a resolution.

These may seem like quick and easy solutions to rectify the problem. However, they can come at a cost and with many side effects which in turn create other issues, and then the cycle continues. This band-aid solution never truly gets to the root cause. Instead of being quick and easy solutions they perpetuate a lifetime of problems. For me, that is not a life that resembles quick and easy.

The truth is, by being more attuned and attentive early on, we can identify issues and address them before they worsen. It’s crucial to listen to the whispers of our body, as they hold valuable clues that can guide us towards better health and well-being.

By tuning in to our bodies more regularly, we can catch warning signs early on. Then we can take steps to address them, potentially nipping a bigger problem in the bud. Paying attention to the subtle signals our bodies send us, and then taking micro actions for correction allows us to maintain a healthy state where diseases and illnesses struggle to take root.

Imagine how listening now can save you a lot of discomfort and lack of quality of life later. Our body has an innate ability to heal itself, naturally and organically. But to properly heal we need to pay attention now and create an environment where healing can happen. I call this the healing state.

This proactive approach not only preserves our energy and vitality but also sets us up for long-term rewards of vitality and aliveness as we age. Now that sounds easier to me.

When considering how to create a strong healthy state within our bodies, it’s crucial to focus on 3 key elements:

Emotional Health: The realization of the deep connection between emotional well-being and physical health is a powerful one! It ignites a transformative journey, empowering individuals to fortify their resilience through stress management and positive relationships. This newfound awareness inspires us to take control of our health by prioritizing self-care and emotional wellness as pivotal tools for preventing and overcoming health challenges.

Physical Health: Moving the body, nutritious eating, and quality sleep are not just lifestyle choices, but critical foundations for optimal health. This understanding sparks a profound shift in perspective. It illuminates the transformative power of prioritizing these pillars, enabling us to fortify the body’s resilience and innate healing capabilities against illness and disease.

Energy Reserves: And do not underestimate the power of energy on the overall health of our body. Maintaining a balance of energy flow and cultivating abundant energy reserves are crucial for sustaining overall well-being. Understanding how practices such as yoga, meditation, and breathwork can help balance energy channels, enhances the body’s ability to thrive.

Here’s an effective strategy for integrating these elements into your daily routine:

Step 1: Begin your day with a 5-minute awareness practice, checking in to your body and noting any discomfort or tightness. Pay attention to your energy levels, emotions, and the state of your nervous system. Write down your observations without judgment in a journal.

Step 2: Take a small, inspired action to address any discomfort or stress. This could be a short meditation to calm your body or a brisk walk to boost your energy. Choose an enjoyable and manageable activity that will allow you to provide relief from what you are feeling and commit to doing it every day for 30 days.

Changing our perspective to a proactive approach, and making small micro changes now, will go a long way to creating long and prosperous life. It’s cumulative, so commit to one small change now and get it working well and then add something else. If you keep making inspired actionable changes bit by bit, before long you will feel like a different person, your energy will start to come back, your mobility may become better, and you will just feel so much more alive.

Sometimes we normalize our problems by saying “this is what happens when you get older” or we identify with our problem as if we have no control. By integrating these 3 essential elements into our daily lives, bringing awareness to it, and taking inspired action, we can create a strong foundation for our body’s healing state.

One of the most impactful lessons I’ve learned is adopting this thought-provoking principle – ‘We don’t know, what we don’t know!’  

This idea serves as a gentle reminder that we often confine ourselves within the limitations of our own knowledge and what experts tell us.

For instance, when faced with pain in our shoulder or knee, it’s easy to fall into the belief that we’re restricted in what we can do. We start reshaping our lives around this newfound limitation, unknowingly aging ourselves in the process.

About ten years ago, I encountered severe knee pain. Despite numerous tests, no conclusive diagnosis was reached. My doctor suggested it could be the onset of arthritis, a prognosis I adamantly refused to accept. He continued to tell me that I should seriously consider giving up running.

Not willing to accept that I would be unable to run again gave me the ammunition to seek other solutions. I became my own test subject, researching and exploring different therapies which eventually brought me to a resolution. The secret to my success was that I believed strongly that there was a solution … and ultimately there was. I successfully resolved the issue and resumed running and even went on to train for ultramarathons and triathlons … and today, I am still pain free.

There comes a pivotal moment when we realize the vast expanse of knowledge that eludes us. It is in this realization that we are nudged to break free from our routines and embrace the unknown.

“I didn’t know what my solution was … but I was confident there was a solution.”

By nurturing our curiosity, questioning the norm, and daring to dream beyond boundaries, we unlock a world of endless possibilities awaiting our exploration.

“We are not simply meant to exist; we are destined to thrive and maximize our inherent potential!”

Consider those who defy conventional limitations imposed by illness or disability. Through unwavering resolve and a firm belief in their capabilities, they defy the odds and emerge stronger than ever before.

Similarly, many individuals facing mobility challenges refuse to succumb to their conditions, not unlike my own story. Instead of resigning themselves to their limitations, they courageously seek out new avenues for improvement, displaying remarkable resilience in the face of adversity.

We have the power to take charge of our lives, face the unknown with courage, and discover our true potential. By nurturing our curiosity, having faith in our abilities, and believing in the existence of a better way, we can overcome obstacles and achieve amazing things.

If I had listened to the advice I was given 10 years ago, I can only imagine how my life would be different today.

Always remember, that you have the power with you to create your own story.

To me, this powerful quote encapsulates the essence of true happiness. The idea of being able to live life unapologetically, without holding back or conforming to societal expectations, is incredibly liberating.

It speaks to the freedom that comes with accepting and embracing one’s authentic self. In a world where conformity and external validation often dictate our actions and choices, the ability to be unapologetically oneself is a rare and precious gift.

When we allow ourselves to be who we truly are, without fear of judgment or rejection, we open ourselves up to a deeper level of contentment and fulfillment.

There is a sense of peace and joy that accompanies living authentically, knowing that we are not compromising our values, beliefs, or individuality for the sake of others.

By embracing our uniqueness and honoring our core identity, we can cultivate a profound sense of inner harmony and satisfaction.

Do you often find yourself saying “yes” when you really want to say “no”? Do you prioritize other people’s needs over your own, even at the expense of your own vitality and overall well-being? If so, you might be struggling with people-pleasing behaviors.

People-pleasing can be a challenging habit to break, but it’s crucial for our own mental and emotional health to cultivate the ability to set boundaries and prioritize our own needs. Here are some key steps to help you liberate yourself from this ingrained habit and embark on a journey towards authenticity and self-empowerment:

  1. Recognize when you are doing it. Take the time to reflect on your motivations behind people-pleasing behaviors. Understand the root causes and patterns that drive you to seek validation and approval from others. Pay attention to your feelings and emotions when you agree to something that you don’t really want to do. Being aware this behavior is the first step toward change.
  2. Embrace authenticity. Being authentic means more than just living true to yourself; it is a profound commitment to honoring your beliefs, values, and needs in all aspects of life. It requires embracing your unique identity and rejecting the pressure to conform to societal expectations or the desires of others. Authenticity permits you to express your genuine thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment, fostering deeper connections and genuine relationships.   3. Practice self-love and self-compassion. Practicing self-love and self-compassion involves treating yourself with kindness, understanding, and empathy. It means embracing your flaws and imperfections, and offering yourself the same level of care and compassion that you would extend to a loved one. By nurturing a positive and supportive relationship with yourself, you cultivate resilience, inner strength, and an unwavering sense of self-worth.

  4. Surround yourself with supportive and understanding people. Surrounding yourself with supportive and understanding people is especially important when it comes to combating people-pleasing behaviors. Being in the presence of individuals who genuinely care about your well-being and understand your struggles can help you break free from the cycle of constantly seeking approval and validation. They can offer a fresh perspective, reminding you that your worth does not depend on pleasing others. Seek out therapy or coaching if you need additional guidance and support.

By conquering people-pleasing behaviors and embracing authenticity, you are taking a significant step toward living a fulfilling and empowered life. Remember, you are worthy of love, respect, and happiness – starting with yourself. Recognizing our patterns, embracing authenticity, practicing self-love and compassion, and surrounding ourselves with supportive people are key steps in this journey of self-empowerment. In midlife, most women encounter one of their most significant challenges: menopause and the assortment of symptoms that accompany it.

Menopause is a natural phase that women experience as they age, marking the end of their reproductive years. However, this transition is often accompanied by various physical and emotional changes. One common factor that significantly affects women during menopause is inflammation in the body. In this article, we explore the impact of menopause on inflammation and emphasize the importance of achieving balance to alleviate its effects.

Inflammation is a natural and necessary response of the body’s immune system to protect against infection and promote healing. Acute inflammation, such as a cut or an infection, plays a crucial role in fighting off pathogens and restoring health. It helps eliminate harmful substances and repair damaged tissues. In fact, inflammation is a vital part of the body’s defense mechanism. However, when inflammation becomes chronic, persisting for long periods, it can become problematic.

Achieving balance becomes vital when aiming to alleviate chronic inflammation at any point in life, including menopause. This involves adopting a holistic approach that addresses both physical and emotional well-being. Here are some key strategies to consider:

  1. Positive Perspective: Creating a positive perspective towards menopause and viewing it as an exciting new stage of a woman’s life can have the added benefit of reducing inflammation. Embracing what menopause signifies, such as a time of personal growth, empowerment, and renewed focus on well-being, can not only improve mental health but also potentially mitigate the inflammatory response in the body, leading to a more balanced and harmonious transition through menopause.
  2. Healthy Diet: A well-balanced diet rich in whole non-inflammatory foods, which may include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and lean proteins, can help reduce inflammation. Incorporating anti-inflammatory foods like fatty fish, turmeric, ginger, and leafy greens can provide relief during menopause.
  3. Regular Exercise: Engaging in regular moderate physical activity not only helps maintain a healthy weight but also decreases inflammation. Activities like walking, yoga, and strength training not only support the management of weight-related concerns but also promote overall well-being.
  4. Stress Management: Chronic stress can exacerbate inflammation. It is crucial to incorporate stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or indulging in activities that bring joy and relaxation.

  6. Sleep and Rest: Quality restorative sleep plays a significant role in balancing the body. Establishing a proper sleep routine and creating a relaxing bedtime environment can aid in reducing inflammation and improving overall well-being.

Palgrave’s Tina Haller believes that balance in four key areas of one’s life – emotional, physical, mental and spiritual – is the solution to a vibrant, healthy, empowered life.

Formally a Statistician for 11 years with Bayer and Glaxo Smith Kline, Tina then freelanced as a statistical consultant for the next 15 years for small biotech companies, clinical research organizations, as well as other pharmaceutical companies.

“The demands of being an independent consultant began to take a toll on my health” Tina recalls. “I was chronically stressed and burned out and had several health concerns. Around that same time, my sister passed away suddenly due to cancer. That was my turning point! I knew I needed to start taking my health seriously.”

“I retired from my statistical career and transitioned into a personal trainer role – part-time in 2009 and moving to full-time in 2015 – that is when my journey to better health began” she explains.

 “I quickly realized that fitness alone was not going to be enough. I went back to school to get my holistic nutritionist certifications in 2016. I soon discovered that while fitness and nutrition were vital components to health there was still a piece of the puzzle missing.  I was eating healthy and exercising often but I still felt unhealthy.”

“That pivotal moment brought forth a profound realization: the mind possesses an extraordinary influence, shaping our behaviors through thoughts and beliefs. It became clear that my own mind, unwittingly, played a role in my illness. And that to truly heal, I needed to heal from the inside out, taking a holistic approach to my health.”

For the past four years, Tina has successfully cultivated her skills as a Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) practitioner and Certified Hypnotherapist. Additionally, as a holistic nutritionist and personal trainer, she combines her comprehensive knowledge of nourishment and physical fitness with her expertise in NLP and Hypnotherapy. Through this multifaceted approach, Tina guides her clients towards holistic well-being, empowering them to achieve their health and wellness goals, creating sustainable, lifelong results.
