Why Misalignment Can Drain More Than Your Mood

Why Misalignment Can Drain More Than Your Mood

May 01, 20265 min read

I was recently featured in Our Routes Magazine in a conversation about my new book, The One Thing That Changes Everything.

On the surface, the article explores a theme that feels deeply familiar to many women in midlife: misalignment.

The moments when you keep saying yes, even though your body wants to say no.
The times you override your truth to keep the peace.
The quiet ways you continue operating from who you were expected to be, instead of who you are now.

And while misalignment may sound like an emotional or personal development issue, I see it as something much deeper.

For many high-functioning midlife women, misalignment can become a capacity problem.

The hidden cost of misalignment

Many women I work with are not lacking intelligence, discipline, motivation, or desire.

They are capable.
They are responsible.
They are often the ones other people rely on.

But by midlife, especially through perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause, the body often becomes less tolerant of the old ways of operating.

Pushing through.
People-pleasing.
Over-functioning.
Holding things in.
Managing everyone else’s needs first.
Pretending something is fine when it is not.

For years, these patterns may have looked like strength.

But eventually, the body begins to tell the truth.

That truth may show up as low energy, brain fog, poor sleep, emotional reactivity, weight resistance, inflammation, or the feeling that you simply do not feel like yourself anymore.

This is where many women start searching for a new plan.

A better diet.
A stricter routine.
A new workout.
Another supplement.
A productivity system.
A fresh promise to finally stay consistent.

But sometimes the plan is not the real problem.

The deeper issue is the capacity underneath the plan.

Why healthy habits do not always stick in midlife

One of the biggest misconceptions about midlife change is that women simply need more discipline.

But in my work, I often see the opposite.

Most high-functioning women already have discipline.

What they may not have is a body and nervous system with enough capacity to sustain the systems they are trying to build.

When your nervous system is overloaded, your stress response is elevated, and your body is navigating hormonal, metabolic, emotional, and life-stage changes, even good habits can feel harder than they should.

You may know what to do.

But knowing what to do and having the internal capacity to do it consistently are not the same thing.

That is why misalignment matters.

Every time you override yourself, silence your truth, stay in a pattern that drains you, or operate from an old identity that no longer fits, your system pays a price.

It may not seem dramatic in the moment.

But over time, those small leaks add up.

Misalignment is an energy leak

This is one of the reasons I created the Capacity Recalibration Framework™.

It helps women look beneath the surface symptoms and ask a more powerful question:

Where is my capacity being quietly drained?

Because once you can see the leak, you can begin to shift the pattern.

Misalignment is one of those leaks.

It can drain energy because it keeps the body in a state of internal conflict.

You may look composed on the outside, but inside there may be tension, suppression, resentment, self-abandonment, or the constant effort of maintaining a version of yourself that no longer feels true.

That internal friction takes energy.

And in midlife, when the body is already adapting to significant biological changes, that energy becomes even more valuable.

What my book is really about

The One Thing That Changes Everything is not about becoming a different person.

It is about listening to the signals that have been asking for your attention.

It is about understanding that the exhaustion, fog, frustration, and loss of self-trust many women feel in midlife may not be random.

They may be invitations to recalibrate.

To stop forcing old systems onto a body that is asking for something wiser.

To stop treating symptoms as isolated problems and start looking at the deeper patterns that are draining energy, clarity, and capacity.

To recognize that alignment is not a luxury.

It is part of how you build a life your body can actually sustain.

A question to sit with

As you read this, ask yourself:

Where am I using energy to keep something in place that no longer feels aligned?

It may be a role.
A relationship pattern.
A way of working.
A way of communicating.
A habit of saying yes.
A standard you have outgrown.
A version of yourself you keep performing because people expect her.

This is not about doing a complete overhaul.

But awareness is often the first place capacity begins to return.

Start with your own Energy Leaks Compass

If this conversation resonates, I invite you to start with the Energy Leaks Compass.

It is a simple reflective tool designed to help you identify where your energy and capacity may be quietly draining, so you can stop guessing and start supporting the right system first.

Take the Energy Leaks Compass here:

And if you see the Our Routes Magazine feature, I hope you read it with this lens:

Misalignment is not just about feeling “off.”

It may be one of the hidden reasons your energy, clarity, habits, and confidence feel harder to sustain than they used to.

And once you can see the leak, you can begin to reclaim the capacity behind your next chapter.
