The two places your energy is quietly slipping away

A woman once said to me, “I don’t understand it. I’m not doing anything extreme… but by the end of the day, I feel like I’ve been leaking energy all day long.”

That word –leaking– stuck.

Because that’s exactly what it feels like for so many women. Not burnout. Not collapse. Just a slow, steady loss.

Like something is quietly draining in the background… and no matter how much you pour back in, it never quite fills. Over time, I’ve noticed that most of that leaking doesn’t come from where we think it does. It comes from two places most people overlook.

Leak #1: Living Slightly Off-Center

Imagine driving a car where the alignment is just slightly off. Not enough to be dangerous. Not enough to stop you from getting where you need to go. But enough that you have to keep adjusting the wheel, constantly correcting, constantly compensating. At first, you barely notice. But, over time, it becomes exhausting.

That’s what misalignment feels like in real life. It’s not always dramatic. It’s subtle. It’s the small moments where something inside you says:

“Slow down.”
“Say no.”
“Rest.”
“Do it differently this time.”

…but you override it. Not because you don’t know better, but because life is busy, people are counting on you, and pushing through has always worked before.

So, you keep going. But every override is a micro-adjustment, and those micro-adjustments add up.

The Cost of Ignoring What You Know

I worked with a woman who described her days as “fine.” She was functioning, productive, and showing up.

But when we slowed things down, she noticed something interesting. There were at least a dozen moments in her day where she knew what she needed, but chose something else:

Skipped lunch to get more done.
Stayed up later than her body wanted.
Said yes to something she didn’t have the capacity for.

None of it looked like a problem at first, until she realized how much energy it was costing her to constantly move against herself. It wasn’t the big decisions. It was the accumulation of the small ones.

Leak #2: Conversations That Never Leave Your Head

Now imagine carrying a conversation with you all day. Not out loud, just in your mind.

Replaying what someone said.
Thinking about what you wish you had said.
Anticipating what might happen next.

It’s like having an open tab in your brain that never closes and it’s running in the background, using energy the entire time.

This is the second major leak: unresolved communication.

The “Unsent Email” Effect

Think about an email you’ve written in your head… but never actually sent.

You draft it mentally.

Edit it. Rewrite it. Second-guess it.

Maybe you soften it. Maybe you make it stronger. Maybe you decide to say nothing at all.

But the conversation doesn’t go away, it lingers, and your system stays slightly on edge.

Now multiply that by multiple relationships. A partner. A colleague. A friend. A family member.

Each one holding a little bit of unspoken tension. That’s not just emotional, that’s physiological. Your nervous system is constantly bracing, processing, and anticipating – and that takes energy.

Why These Two Leaks Matter So Much

What misalignment and unresolved communication have in common is this:

They both create internal resistance. And resistance requires energy to maintain, even if nothing is happening on the outside, something is always happening on the inside. That’s the part most people don’t account for.

The Turning Point

Most people try to solve this by adding more.

More structure. More routines. More strategies.

But if your system is already leaking, adding more is like pouring water into a bucket with holes. It helps, temporarily, but it doesn’t hold. The real shift happens when you start looking in a different direction. Not at what you need to add, but at what is quietly draining you.

A Different Kind of Awareness

You don’t need to overhaul your entire life to begin. Start smaller and ask yourself:

Where am I slightly off-centre right now?
Where am I overriding what I already know?
What conversation am I still carrying that hasn’t been resolved?

You don’t need to fix it all today. But noticing it? That’s where your energy starts to come back.
